Liwa Oasis, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Liwa Oasis is located 220km south-west of Abu Dhabi Island on the northern edge of the Empty Quarter (the Ruba’ Al Khali Desert) and is one of the largest oases on the Arabian Peninsula. The 100km long oasis is home to dunes of multi coloured sands, and date plantations. The annual Liwa Date Festival and desert sporting events are the star attractions of the Oasis.

The Tel Moreeb dune at Liwa is very famous and one of the highest sand dunes in the world at almost 300 metres in height, with a width of 1600m and an incline of 50 degrees. The Oasis hosts an annual charity competition Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge for 4x4 vehicles, motorcycles, and quad bikes. The newly built desert resort Qasr Al Sarab in Liwa has already become a landmark for tourism in the Gulf. With many different-coloured sand dunes, its sprinkling of verdant oases and its star-studded night skies, there's no wonder that Liwa Oais in Abu Dhabi has become a for travelers.
