Though the taxis are the most preferred way of transport, bus services are getting popular day by day as a preferred means of public transport in . Work is currently underway in the emirate to develop an Abu Dhabi metro system.
Buses
Abu Dhabi Department of Public Transport has launched bus services all over the emirate, as well as in the city. The buses in Abu Dhabi are operated around the clock and fares are very cheap, costing as little as Dhs.1 for travel within the city. Special bus passes called ‘Ojra’ can be obtained from bus stands or any Red Crescent Kiosk in Abu Dhabi. Detailed information on Ojra bus passes is available through the website www.ojra.ae.
There are numerous bust stops in many of the residential areas and the main bus station is located on Hazza bin Zayed Road. There are buses being operated between Dubai and Abu Dhabi by both the emirates jointly and it runs every 40 minutes from 6.30 AM to 9.30 PM starting from Al Wahda Mall Bus Stop in Abu Dhabi and returning from Al Ghubaiba station in Dubai. There are Abu Dhabi buses with number 901 starting from Abu Dhabi International Airport and going to Abu Dhabi city, run every 40 minutes, 24 hours a day and travel time to the city is approximately 75 minutes, depending on traffic.
Taxis
TransAD is operating the taxi fleet service in Abu Dhabi city. Taxi is the most common and preferred method of getting around the emirate. There are around 7,000 taxis doing their service in Abu Dhabi. Women's Taxis which were introduced recently in the city has been highly appreciated by the residents. Taxis can either be booked over phone or flagged down at the roadside.
The fare charts are displayed on the dashboard inside every taxi in Abu Dhabi and tipping are very rare and it depends on the passenger's discretion. Night time fares are comparatively more than the daytime fares which may start from around 3 Dhs. with an increment of 1 Dh. for every additional kms of a journey.
